Depression is on the increase worldwide and World Health Organization (WHO) have pointed out that it is in the top three illnesses suffered within the population, with over 450 million people worldwide likely to suffer from mental health issues (WHO, 2010). Depression is more than feeling low occasionally, which we all do. Depression is more sustained and can lead to a disruption in a person’s daily life. It can lead to physical as well as mental problems where some people may experience eating disorders, heart problems, addictions (such as drugs and alcohol) as well as feeling suicidal. The illness is therefore an important problem within society which has widespread implications not just for the individual but also for those around them.
