ideas, innovations and apps for social work in the age of smartphones and social media

What Developers Of Social Work Apps Can Learn From The Health Sector

HRA recent post by Steven Chan, iMedicalApps, on “Important tips for doctors with medical app ideas” addresses an range of problems that healthcare professionals run into while developing their own apps. After attending the Health: Refactored conference Chan describes the following challenges that may be similar for app developers in the social sector:

  • Nobody has a complete picture of a patient’s care
  • People use different devices – platforms can be a solution
  • Devices don’t work together
  • No standards – unclear APIs
  • Difficult balance for companies between being open and being competitive
  • Who is the owner of the information: the companies or the patient/client?

However, Chan concludes:

The trend towards making data and app development more efficient is clear. And multiple parties — patients, physicians, other providers, and industry–want data to be shared, interoperable, and usable. Both government officials and industry executives are keenly optimistic that this will happen in the very short-term future.
